The Fore River Bridge will be replaced through the Patrick-Murray Administration's historic, $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP). Ending in 2016, this program will reduce the number of structurally deficient bridges across the Commonwealth and prevent others from falling into this classification. Replacement of the Fore River Bridge is one of the most significant projects undertaken through this program. Innovative techniques are the hallmark of the ABP and include design/build construction, advanced project scheduled, new construction methods and a streamlined environmental process. A Design/Build ProjectDesign/build
construction methods will be used to speed construction of the new Fore
River
Bridge. As opposed to traditional
projects where contractors bid to construct a design already brought to
completion by a design firm, the design/build team is chosen based on a
best-value analysis using a design/build procurement process. Led by a partnership between the firms of
J.F. White and Skanska-Koch, the design/build team is responsible for
progressing the 25% design to final design and constructing the project. This approach allows for work to begin sooner
with portions of the project already under construction while final
design for other
elements is still in progress. This
procurement method allows MassDOT to take advantage of the
contractor’s
expertise during final design. Lastly,
design/build jobs result in shorter construction schedules which helps
to
contain project costs. |
